News from Deakin University

Deakin University has a new full-time staff member in Neville Hurst who commenced during 2009 after a successful career in property and real estate education at Swinburne for many years.  Neville has a strong background in real estate which has impressed the students in Property Management and associated units.

Deakin University has been working closely with the API and once again assisted in May 2009 with the delivery of another module of the Specialist Retail Valuer course at the API Victorian office.  In September 2009 Sara Wilkinson presented a paper at the API Victorian Conference on ‘sustainability and residential value’ whilst Neville Hurst presented a paper co-authored with Amy Guy and Richard Reed about mapping and property.  Also in September Richard presented a paper on ‘automated valuation models’ (AVMs) at the API South Australian conference.

From 2010 the property course at Deakin course will be relocating to the Business and Law Faculty at the Burwood campus (from the Faculty of Science and Technology).  This will not affect existing staff and students who are already located on this campus but will provide resources for additional postgraduate offerings.

News from RMIT

They also have a new academic staff member, Judith Callahan.  James Baxter has just published a Rural Valuation textbook and Matt Myers is conducting an exciting RMIT Study Tour to Fiji.

David Higgins

News from UniSA

UniSA is pleased to announce the appointment of its first Professor of Property, Professor David Parker. This is also the first such appointment in South Australia. David comes to the university with a strong industry background in portfolio management, asset management and property analysis and the property academics at UniSA are looking forward very much to working with their new professor!

Another important landmark in 2009 was Peter Rossini receiving his 25 Years Long Service Award from the UniSA Vice Chancellor Professor Peter Hoj!  A great achievement and Peter richly deserves the award.

This year also saw the signing of an important MOU between the UniSA and the SA State Government Land Services Group (Valuer General).  The MOU sets out criteria for mutual cooperation in terms of research opportunities and contribution to the implementation of world’s best land administration practice. The initiative came out of a number of meetings held between the SA Valuer General and members of the Property Group including visiting Professor Stanley McGreal from the University of Ulster. This lays a good foundation for building future collaboration between UniSA and the property industry in SA.

Paul Kershaw retired from UniSA in 2009 but has been retained as an Adjunct Research Fellow and continues to attend and contribute to PRRES.  A great night was held by all at his Property Group farewell dinner; location? Where else but the Adelaide Cricket Ground!

In his final year of teaching Paul has also won a prestigious teaching award as part of a School of Commerce team, and been awarded a highly competitive Australian Award for University Teaching from the National Australian Learning and Teaching Council. The awards are worth $25,000 each, and recognise the nation's top university teachers. With only 24 awards granted in 2009, this is significant and prestigious achievement. The awardees will attend a ceremony at Parliament House in Canberra where they will be presented with their Award by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Education, The Honourable Julia Gillard.

Pacific Rim Property Research Journal - Online

PRRES members will be aware that they receive the Pacific Rim Property Research Journal (PRPRJ) in hard copy, four times a year as a part of membership.  Some members may not be aware that all the articles from PRPRJ are also published on the PRRES website and available in electronic format, free of charge.

The articles from each edition are available edition-by-edition from the PRRES home page or from the PRPRJournal link.  Also using the Search facility on the PRRES webpage (from Search link) provides access to the index of all papers held on the PRRES website.

Nearly 1000 articles are currently held on the PRRES site and searchable by a number of criteria.  These are from the PRPRJ or the annual PRRES conference.  Each of these articles now has a static address.  Members who publish papers are requested to provide this address for access to their articles rather than sending out copies of paper via e-mail or putting papers on other servers to access via links.  There are two advantages in this.  It promotes PRRES and may encourage users to search for more papers. Also PRRES are now able to track “hits” on individual articles and it’s is proposed that the results will be made available in some way.  By sending people to your paper on the PRRES site you will get a better idea of how many people are accessing your work.

To find the static address of your paper (using internet explorer)

  1. Go to the PRRES web site and to the Search link in the top menu.

  2. Enter your last name as the authors name in the second section to search the PRRES database of papers. This will find any papers where your last name is listed as one of the authors.

  3. Once you click search you should get a list of all your papers together with the title, abstract, keywords and a link to the paper if we hold the full paper.

  4. If there is a blue active link to your paper RIGHT CLICK on the link and choose “open in new window”. This will open your paper in a separate window and the static address will be in the address bar at the top of the screen.

  5. You can link to this address directly.
